"These Lahontan Cutthroat Trout Haven't Missed a Meal" 10/12/21
The last week and a half has been nothing short of spectacular reel screaming monster cutthroat out here at Pyramid lake! The nice mild fall weather has been amazing for staying above schools of bait and ferocious trout over eating. Fish that are stuffed to the gills with baitfish and a gas tank full of race fuel. If you have had the chance to experience these fish that treat 8 weights like cane poles you know what I’m talking about.
Pure chaos often erupts as these fish come up to the surface and realize a weird creature is pulling them up trying to coax them out of the water. Get your hand off that reel as quick, as these pissed off carnivores peel off in an instant. We have seen fish daily in that “oh sh!t”, category and hundreds in the dd range it feels like and it’s just the beginning of the second week of the season. The size classes are continuing to grow at tremendous rates and they are as happy as can be.
As weather creeps in fast we need to remember that safety is our number one concern out on the water. Yesterday we had a nasty push of winter like weather out at the lake. The mountains are covered in snow, the was wind is howling and the waves were surf worthy. Not the type of weather we encourage anyone to venture out into this large inland sea as she’s known to swallow and capsize boats each and every year.
The welcome change in weather we have all been waiting for is a good thing. As the water temperature drops the fish begin to frequent the shallows more often allowing us to ditch the watercraft and fish from shore. The majority of our season is spent fishing the beautiful beaches the run up along the west side of the lake as we chase these large cutthroat as they move with their food source. They will continue feeding on baitfish as they push towards the shallows and continue to fatten up before winter really sets in.
Tui chub patterns are these trouts main good source this time of year and they are very opportunistic feeders and rarely pass up a well presented fly. Getting you flies down to the fish is key when fishing these bait balls. In the last few days the fish have pushed in a tad shallower and we have been finding the thickest in 40-50ft of water. Heavy sinking lines and bead head/weighted streamer patterns have been getting our flies down into the zone to produce grabs. Flies in all the natural colors have been key as well as changing your bugs according to the weather and cloud cover.
Confidence is key!
With November right around the corner we start gearing up for shore fishing and can’t be more excited. November is another amazing month for Red hot monster cutthroat as they continue to inhale bait fish and have more energy than they know what to do with. So rather than wonder what the fishing is like give us a call and come find out! After all, you can’t catch em from the couch.
